At Murray River Animal Hospital, we understand how distressing it can be when your pet experiences a sudden illness or injury. That’s why our dedicated veterinary team is here to provide urgent, stress-free, and compassionate care when you need it most.

Whether it's a critical injury, poisoning, difficulty breathing, seizures, or collapse, we’re ready to act fast and prioritise your pet’s needs.

We inform our routine appointments when an emergency is coming, and reschedule where necessary, or explain what is happening so they understand why they are waiting. An emergency always takes priority and everyone understands and knows that if it was their pet in trouble, they would appreciate the same courtesy and patience

Please phone us on your way in. It allows us to prepare for your pet’s arrival, alert the team, and if needed, reschedule less urgent appointments so we can focus on your pet without delay.

Stay Calm & Gather Information:
We know it’s hard, but staying calm helps you share important details. Please let us know:

  • What has happened
  • When symptoms started
  • If any medications or toxins are involved (bring packaging if possible)

Bring Any Relevant Items:

  • Current medications
  • Product labels if your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have
  • Medical history or recent test results (if from another clinic)

Emergency Care FAQs

Q: Can I walk in during an emergency, or do I need to call first?
A: YES.  For after-hours, please call us (02) 6054-1838 and our team of triage vets will  advise you on the best next steps. We have a local vet on call until 10pm every night, and from 7am until 10pm on weekends. We share a roster with the vets at Fur Life Albury, so depending of the vet on call, you will be directed to either clinic. Often we will meet you in the clinic for emergency treatment. After 10pm our triage vets will help find you what you need.

Q: What types of emergencies do you treat?
A: We treat a wide range of emergencies including:

  • Trauma (e.g. car accidents)
  • Toxicities and poisoning
  • Heatstroke
  • Seizures
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Bloat
  • Sudden collapse
  • Uncontrolled bleeding

Q: Do you offer after-hours emergency care?
A: We’re available for emergencies during clinic hours. For after-hours, please call us and our message will guide you to the nearest emergency provider.

Q: Will other clients be upset if my pet is seen before their appointment?
A: We pride ourselves on transparency and empathy. If a critical patient is arriving, we inform waiting clients and reschedule less urgent cases. Our community is incredibly understanding — everyone wants the best for every animal.

Q: What should I do if my pet ate something toxic?
A: Call immediately and bring the packaging of the product ingested. Knowing the exact ingredients and concentration can be life-saving.
