Understanding Anxiety in Your Pet

Understanding Anxiety in Your Pet

PET ANXIETY

Pet anxiety is more common than many people realise. While dog anxiety is becoming more widely recognised, our feline friends are often overlooked because they are so good at hiding it – and both dogs and cats can experience stress long before it becomes obvious!

Pets show early anxiety, as shown in the “yellow zone”, quietly telling us they’re uncomfortable. If these signs are missed, ignored or punished, anxiety can escalate into the “red zone”, where fear and distress are much harder to manage.

Pets who reach the red zone aren’t “naughty” or “difficult” – they’re scared and running out of communication options, and their behaviour reflects the level of threat they believe they are facing.

If your pet seems on edge, there may be subtle triggers, pain, or an underlying medical issue contributing to their anxiety. Pain always makes anxiety worse.

A full health assessment allows us to rule out illness and identify triggers. From there, we can support your pet with environmental changes, behaviour guidance, and medication if necessary.

Our hospital is both dog and cat-friendly, using calming pheromones and gentle handling techniques to keep visits as stress-free as possible

If you feel your dog or cat may be showing signs of anxiety, please give us a call on (02) 6054 1838

Because calmer pets = happier pets
