Vaccinations

We recommend:

  C5 vaccination for all dogs

Proheart yearly injection for prevention of heartworm in dogs

  F3 vaccination for all cats

FIV vaccination for cats who have free outdoor access

We recommend YEARLY vaccination of dogs and cats as the best way to prevent serious infectious diseases.

Puppies and Kittens

Every 4 week puppies and kittens need an additional booster vaccination until they have adequate immunity to provide protection from deadly viral diseases. A priming and a booster vaccination need to be given to the young pet once it has an active immune system. The MRAH nurses will help work out your puppy and kitten vaccination schedule tailored to their specific risk factors, previous vaccinations and current living conditions.

More Details:

Dogs:

The diseases covered in a C5 vaccination are:

  • Canine Parvovirus which is a highly contagious virus that survives in the environment. It causes severe bloody diarrhea and vomiting and can be deadly.

  • Distemper which was a terrible disease before vaccination. The virus affects the brain, lungs and  digestive system and is easily caught from all secretions from infected dogs.

  • Adenoviral hepatitis, caused by a Virus affecting liver and all organs. It is spread by being ingested or inhaled.

  • Parainfluenza virus which is the viral component of canine cough - also known as kennel cough

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is the bacterial component of kennel cough. This infectious bacteria is related to whooping cough.

By staying up to date with C5 vaccinations, your dog is protected from serious diseases, and eligible to stay in boarding kennels any time.

Proheart injections are an effective and convenient way of ensuring that your dog does not get heartworm. It is not a vaccination, but it is a yearly injection with a long acting medication that stops heartworm from developing if your dog is bitten by an infected mosquito.

Additional Reasons for annual vaccinations:

Full Health Check:

Your pet will receive a full health check at the time of vaccination, at no additional fee. At this time we will address any additional issues that we find.

It is important that we give your dog or cat a full health check on a yearly basis. Since our pets age much more quickly than we do, a year is a significant amount of time. Our training allows us to pick up early signs of disease - or we may pick up the results of small ongoing changes that you don't notice since you are with your pet all the time. It is always better to detect any problems before they become serious. Early detection of an issue that can be treated could extend your pet’s life by many years.

The pre-vaccination consultation and examination is also important to ensure that your dog is healthy and likely to have an efficient and available immune system capable of responding effectively to vaccination. If we find that your pet is fighting an infection or disease, we will usually delay the vaccination until your pet it well.

If you have any questions, worries or concerns please ask any of our friendly staff for further information.

These diseases are frequently fatal, and the risk of adverse effects from vaccination is very small.

So the risk vs benefit analysis is strongly in favour of vaccination.

Cats:

F3 vaccination covers:

  • Feline Panleucopaenia, caused by a parvovirus which attacks the blood cells

  • Feline Calicivirus, which causes a severe and recurrent upper respiratory tract infection, commonly called cat flu

  • Feline Herpes Virus, which causes a severe and recurrent upper respiratory tract infection, also called cat flu

FIV vaccination provides protection from Feline immunodeficiency virus, or Feline Aids.
